translation はラテン語 translatio に由来し、trans-「越えて」+ latus「運ばれた」から成る語です。もともと「向こう側へ運ぶこと」で、意味を別の言語へ“運ぶ”感覚から「翻訳」になりました。関連語は translate, transfer です。
Translation comes from Latin translatio, from trans- "across" and latus, the past participle of a verb meaning "carry." Its first sense was the act of carrying something from one side to another.
