chamois はフランス語 chamois から入り、さらに後期ラテン語 camox、ひいてはアルプス地方の古い土着語名にさかのぼると考えられます。もとは山地のカモシカの固有名で、そこからその皮革名にも広がったため、動物名がそのまま英語に残った語です。関連語は shammy。
Chamois came into English from French chamois. It goes back through Late Latin camox and probably to an older Alpine regional name for the animal. The word first named the mountain goat-antelope itself, and later was also used for the soft leather made from its skin. The English form shammy is a later related development.
