chestnut は中英語 chasteine を経て、古フランス語 chastain、さらにラテン語 castanea、ギリシャ語 kastaneia にさかのぼります。語末の nut は英語で「木の実」と分かりやすく添えられた形で、関連語に Castanea、castanet があり、「栗の実」という意味が見えます。
Chestnut came through Middle English and Old French from Latin castanea, which in turn goes back to Greek kastaneia. In English, the ending was shaped by nut, making the word easier to understand as the name of a nut-bearing tree and its fruit. Over time the form became more English-looking while keeping its older Mediterranean roots. A related scientific name is Castanea.
