hazel は古英語 hæsel にさかのぼる語で、さらにゲルマン祖語 *hasalaz に由来します。もとはハシバミの木や実を指し、その実の黄褐色から「淡褐色の」という形容詞の意味が生まれました。関連語は hazelnut、witch-hazel。
Hazel goes back to Old English `haesel`, from an older Germanic root. It first named the hazel tree and its nut.
