alloy は中世フランス語 alloy を経て、ラテン語 alligare「結びつける」に連なる語です。ad-「〜へ」+ ligare「結ぶ」の発想どおり、別の金属を結び合わせて一つにするのが原義です。ally や ligament と同系と見ると、単なる混合でなく「結合」の語だと見えてきます。
