解説 Definition
金属を主成分として、他の金属や炭素などの元素を混ぜて作る物質です。強度・軽さ・耐食性など、純金属にはない性質を持たせるために使われます。
An alloy is a metal made by mixing two or more metals, or a metal with another element. Alloys are produced to make the material stronger, harder, or more useful than a pure metal.

alloy は中世フランス語 alloy を経て、ラテン語 alligare「結びつける」に連なる語です。ad-「〜へ」+ ligare「結ぶ」の発想どおり、別の金属を結び合わせて一つにするのが原義です。ally や ligament と同系と見ると、単なる混合でなく「結合」の語だと見えてきます。
Alloy came through medieval French and is connected to Latin alligare, meaning bind to, from ad- and ligare. The original idea was not just mixing metals, but joining them into one. That sense of binding together stayed at the center as the word developed in English. It is related to ligament and ally.
