ヘラジカは、北米とユーラシアに生息する大きな鹿です。オスは大きく平らな角を持ち、非常に大きな体をしています。
A moose is a very large wild animal from the deer family. It lives in cold forest areas, especially in North America and northern Europe, and the male usually has very large flat horns.

mooseは北米先住民のアルゴンキン系言語から英語に入った語で、AbenakiのmozやOjibweのmoozと同根とされる。語源は「木の皮をはぎ取るもの」に結びつけられ、冬に樹皮を食べる巨大な動物の見え方が、そのまま名づけになった。
Moose entered English from an Algonquian language of North America, probably through forms like Abenaki moz or Ojibwe mooz. The original word is often linked to the idea of "one that strips bark," referring to the animal's habit of eating tree bark in winter. English borrowed the native name directly, keeping the connection to how the animal was observed in its environment.
