addictiveは addict＋-ive で、「中毒にさせる性質の」を作った語です。addict はラテン語 addicere にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」＋ dicere「言い渡す」から、もとは法的に身柄を引き渡す感覚でした。addiction や verdict と同じ dicere の根をもち、「逃れにくい」が今の意味につながります。
