verdict の「評決」は、裁判で陪審や裁判所が有罪・無罪などの結論を正式に示す語として覚えます。dict は predict や dictate にも見える「言う・述べる」の感覚につながり、verdict は法廷で述べられる最終判断です。jury's verdict, reach a verdict, guilty verdict, not-guilty verdict のまとまりで押さえると、公式な結論のイメージが定着します。sentence は評決後の刑罰宣告なので区別しましょう。
Notice the dict part, which appears in words about saying or telling, like predict and dictate. A verdict is the final judgment stated in court, such as guilty or not guilty. A verdict is a final judgment or decision made after considering facts, evidence, or different opinions. It is often used for a jury's decision in court, but it can also describe the final evaluation of something such as a film, a plan, or an experiment. The word suggests that the process is finished and a clear conclusion has been reached.

verdict は「最終的に言い渡される判断」として覚えると残りやすい。dict を含む語は dictionary, predict, dictate など「言葉で述べる」感覚につながりやすく、verdict も法廷で示される“判断の言葉”。jury’s verdict, return/reach a verdict, guilty verdict をまとめて覚えると定着しやすい。特に sentence は刑罰の宣告、verdict は有罪・無罪などの結論なので別物。法廷外でも the verdict on the plan のように「評価・結論」に広がる。
Think of verdict as the final words that give a decision. The part dict appears in words like predict, dictate, and dictionary, so it can remind you of something said in words. It is useful to learn common phrases such as jury's verdict, reach a verdict, and guilty verdict. Also remember that a sentence is the punishment announced by the court, while a verdict is the decision such as guilty or not guilty.

verdict の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 verdict から。ラテン語 vere dictum(真実を言われたもの)が語源で、vere(真実に)+ dictum(言われたこと)に分解できる。verify(検証する)、dictate(口述する)と同根。陪審員が「真実を述べる」行為が「評決」となった。
`Verdict` came into English through Anglo-French and Old French, from Latin `vere dictum`, literally "a true saying." It combines `vere` meaning "truly" and `dictum` meaning "something said." The idea was that a jury was speaking the truth, and related English words include `verify` and `dictate`.
