解説 Definition
ある物質や行為に強く依存して、それがないと生活できない状態で、身体的・心理的な苦痛を伴います。依存の対象を断ち切るのが難しく、日常生活や人間関係に悪影響を及ぼすこともあります。
Addiction is a strong and harmful need for a substance, activity, or habit that is difficult to control. It is often used for alcohol, drugs, gambling, or similar behavior. The word usually suggests both physical or mental dependence and negative effects on life.

addiction は addict + -ion で、addict はラテン語 addicere「引き渡す・言い渡す」に由来します。ad-「…へ」+ dicere「言う」から成り、もとは法的に身柄を渡すことが、のちに習慣へ身を明け渡す「依存」の意味へ発展しました。関連語は addict、dictate。
