attachment は attach＋-ment で、attach は古フランス語 attachier に由来します。語根はゲルマン系の stake「杭」と同系で、detach も同根です。もとは「杭につなぎ留める」ことなので、付属品にも愛着にも「結びついて離れない」感覚が残ります。
Attachment is formed from attach and the noun ending -ment. Attach came through Old French attachier and is linked to a Germanic root seen in words about stakes or fastening.
