Dependence is the state of needing someone or something for support, help, or normal functioning. It is often used for drugs, money, technology, or relationships. The word can suggest a strong need that may be difficult to control or avoid.

dependence はラテン語 de-「下へ」+ pendere「ぶら下がる」に由来し、depend に状態を表す -ence が付いた語です。pendant や suspend も同じ pend- を含み、何かにぶら下がって支えられるイメージが「依存」の意味をはっきり示します。
Dependence comes from Latin roots: de- meaning "down" and pendere meaning "to hang," through the verb depend. It first carried the idea of something hanging from or being supported by something else. That image later became the sense of relying on another person or thing. Related English words include pendant and suspend.
