depend on は on を含めて一まとまりで覚えるのが重要。depend だけで止めず、「何に依存するか」が後ろに来る形で定着させる。意味は rely on に近いが、depend on のほうが守備範囲が広く、人を頼るにも、結果が条件で決まるにも使える。I depend on my team. と The result depends on the weather. を対で覚えると、「支えにする」と「〜次第だ」が同じ核だと見えやすい。count on は「期待して当てにする」色がやや強い。

depend はラテン語 dependere にさかのぼり、de-「下へ」+ pendere「ぶら下がる」から成ります。もともとは「何かにぶら下がって決まる」で、depend on は「〜に頼る・〜次第である」。関連語は pending, suspend。
Depend goes back to Latin dependere, made from de- meaning down and pendere meaning hang. The original image is of hanging from something below or being attached to it. That developed into the idea of relying on something or being decided by it; pending and suspend come from the same Latin root.
