Coherent is about parts fitting together smoothly into one whole. A clear sentence is not enough if the full explanation jumps around, so think of a coherent argument or coherent story. coherent はラテン語 cohaerere に由来し、co-「共に」+ haerere「くっつく」がそのまま入っています。原義は「一緒に張りつく」で、考えや文章がばらばらでなく結びつくから「一貫した」です。adhere や inherent も同じ語根で、意味の芯はいつも「くっつく」です。
"Coherent" comes from Latin cohaerere, from co- "together" and haerere "to stick." Its earliest sense was literally "sticking together." That later became the idea of thoughts, speech, or writing being well connected and consistent. Related words like "adhere" and "inherent" share the same root idea of sticking.
