reindeer は北欧語系の語が英語に入ったもので、古ノルド語 hreinn「トナカイ」に由来する rein と、古英語 deor「動物」の deer からできています。deer は昔は広く「獣」を意味したので、語全体では「トナカイという獣」という成り立ちです。関連語は deer, rendier です。
Reindeer is made from a Scandinavian word for the animal, from Old Norse hreinn, together with deer from Old English deor. In older English, deer did not mean only the modern animal; it could mean a wild animal more generally. The compound therefore originally meant something like "the reindeer animal," before becoming the fixed name of the species.
