conditional は condition「条件」に形容詞化の接尾辞 -al が付いた語。condition は古フランス語を経てラテン語 condicio「取り決め」にさかのぼり、con-「共に」+ dicere「言う」から成るため、「言い交わした約束しだい」が「条件付きの」へつながった。関連語は condition, dictate。
Conditional comes from condition with the adjective ending -al. Condition came through Old French from Latin condicio, meaning an agreement or stated terms, from parts meaning "together" and "to say," related to dictate. So conditional first had the sense of depending on agreed terms, and then more generally came to mean "dependent on something else."
