Amber is a yellow-orange or golden-brown color. As a noun, it can also mean a hard yellow-brown substance from ancient tree resin, often used in jewelry and decoration.

「amber」は古フランス語 ambre を経て、アラビア語 anbar「竜涎香」に由来するとされ、のちに色や質感の近さから琥珀樹脂にも使われるようになった語。ambergris と同根で、もとは香料の名だったと知ると、amber が単なる色名でなく「珍しく価値あるもの」の響きを帯びる理由がわかる。
Amber came into English through Old French ambre, from Arabic anbar. It first referred to ambergris, a rare fragrant substance, and only later was applied to fossil resin because of a similar color and valued quality. That history is also seen in ambergris, which shares the same source.
