chintz の語源・成り立ち Etymology
chintz はヒンディー語 chint「まだら模様の布」が源で、さらにサンスクリット語 citra「色鮮やかな、斑の」にさかのぼる。語の中心には“細かな色柄が散る”イメージがあり、日本語の更紗の華やかさにぴったり重なる。関連語は chintzy。
Chintz comes from Hindi chint, meaning a spotted or variegated cloth, and it goes back further to Sanskrit citra, "bright" or "many-colored." The word carried with it the idea of colorful, patterned fabric. In English it later also inspired chintzy, which first meant "like chintz" and then developed more negative senses.
