蝶や蛾が成虫になる過程で、幼虫から成虫へ変化する蛹の段階、またはその蛹を指します。特に蝶の生活環を説明するときによく使われます。

chrysalis の語源・成り立ち Etymology
chrysalis はギリシャ語 khrysallis に由来し、語幹 chrys- は khrysos「金」です。chrysanthemum や chrysolite と同じ chrys- をもち、金色がかった蛹もあることから、「金の殻」という感覚でさなぎを呼んだ語だとわかります。
Chrysalis comes from Greek khrysallis, and its root chrys- comes from khrysos, meaning "gold." The word may have referred to the golden color seen in some pupae.
