ラテン語 cirrus「巻いた毛、房、カール」がそのまま新ラテン語を通って雲の名になった語。細く縮れた筋のように見えるので巻雲を cirrus と呼び、関連語の cirrocumulus、cirrostratus でも同じ cirr- が「巻いた」を表す。
Cirrus comes from Latin cirrus, meaning a curl, lock of hair, or tuft. Scientists used it for cloud names because these clouds looked like thin curled strands.
