A clerestory is an upper part of a wall with windows that let light and sometimes air into a building. It is mainly used in architecture, especially for churches, halls, and large rooms.

Clerestory probably comes from Middle English clear story. Clear came through Old French from Latin clarus, meaning bright, and story belongs to the same family as history. The phrase originally meant a bright upper level, and then became the name for the high row of windows that let light in.
