cockatooはマレー語・インドネシア語kakatuaに由来し、オランダ語を経て英語に入った鳥名です。接頭辞・接尾辞で分ける語ではありませんが、学名Cacatuaや古形kakatoeに同じ語源が見えます。異国の珍しいオウムの呼び名が、そのまま英語に持ち込まれた語です。
Cockatoo comes from Malay and Indonesian kakatua, and it reached English through Dutch. It is not built from smaller English parts, but was borrowed as the name of an exotic bird. The sound and form were kept fairly close to the original, which is also seen in the scientific name Cacatua.
