coco はポルトガル語・スペイン語の coco「顔つきの怖いもの、鬼」に由来するとされる。ココナツの殻の三つの穴が顔に見えたため名づけられ、そこから coconut の前半にも入った。関連語は coconut、cocoanut。
As a common lexical element, coco comes through Portuguese and Spanish coco, a word used for a frightening face or bogey figure. The three marks on a coconut shell were thought to resemble a face, and the word consequently became associated with the fruit, surviving in coconut and cocoanut. When Coco is used as a personal, pet, business, or place name, however, its origin can vary and need not derive from the coconut term.
