ラテン語 codex の複数形で、もとは caudex「木の幹・木片」の異形です。code と同根で、木板を綴じた帳面から「写本」の意になり、巻物ではなくページを束ねた本だと分かる語です。
Codices is the Latin plural of codex. Codex comes from Latin, probably from caudex, meaning a tree trunk or block of wood. The word first referred to wooden tablets bound together, then to a manuscript book with pages instead of a scroll. Code is from the same root.
