解説 Definition
コーヒーは、コーヒーノキの種子（豆）を焙煎・抽出した飲み物であり、世界中で広く親しまれている嗜好飲料である。カフェインを含み、覚醒・集中効果があるとされ、朝の一杯として多くの人に飲まれている。ブラック・ラテ・カプチーノなど様々な飲み方がある。
Coffee is a drink made by brewing roasted and ground seeds, commonly called beans, from the coffee plant. The word can also refer to a serving of this drink, the beans or plant, and the characteristic flavor used in foods.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
coffee は日本語の「コーヒー」とほぼ同じですが、英語では drink coffee、a cup of coffee、black coffee、freshly brewed coffee が定番です。飲料一般なら不可算で I drink coffee、一杯なら a coffee や two coffees と数えられることもあります。豆そのものは coffee beans と明示して覚えましょう。
Use a morning scene to organize the main combinations: drink coffee, order a cup of coffee, take it black, and smell freshly brewed coffee. As a general beverage, coffee is usually uncountable, as in “I drink coffee.” In cafés, however, a coffee can mean one serving, and two coffees means two cups or orders. The seeds are normally called coffee beans, even though botanically they are seeds. Connect coffee with café and caffeine, but remember that a café is a place and caffeine is the stimulant found in coffee and other products.

coffee の語源・成り立ち Etymology
アラビア語 qahwa（コーヒー、元は酒の意）からトルコ語 kahve を経て、オランダ語 koffie やイタリア語 caffè を通じて欧州に広まった。エチオピアのカッファ地方が原産地とする説もある。café（カフェ）や caffeine（カフェイン）は同語源の関連語である。
Coffee reached English through Dutch koffie, related to Italian caffè and Turkish kahve, from Arabic qahwa. The Arabic word had earlier associations with a kind of beverage and became the name for coffee as the drink spread from the Arab world through the Ottoman Empire and Europe. The similar name of Kaffa, a region in Ethiopia, has encouraged a popular origin story, but the direct linguistic path of the English word is through Arabic and Turkish. Café and caffeine belong to the same word history.
