collet は古フランス語 collet「小さな首輪・えり」からで、col（首）←ラテン語 collum にさかのぼります。機械のコレットが軸を輪で締める部品なのは、まさに「首輪」の発想。collar や decollete も同じ首の語根です。
Collet came into English from Old French collet, meaning a small collar or neckband. That French word comes from col, "neck," from Latin collum. The sense later widened to any ring-like part that grips around something, which is why the mechanical use keeps the old idea of a collar; collar and decollete are related words.
