tonsil はラテン語 tonsillae『扁桃』に由来する医学語で、日常語というより身体部位名として受け継がれました。はっきりした接頭辞分解はしにくい語ですが、tonsillar や tonsillitis に同じ語幹が残り、喉の奥の対になった腺を指す感覚が見えます。
Tonsil comes from Latin tonsillae, the word for the tonsils. It entered English mainly as a medical and body-part term rather than as an everyday word. The form did not change much, and later English built new forms from the same stem, such as tonsillar and tonsillitis.
