解説 Definition
物質の原子や分子がどのように配置されているか、その空間的な構造を表す名詞。特に化学では、分子が取る三次元的な形がどのようになっているかを説明する際に用いる。
The shape, arrangement, or structure of something, especially the way its parts are organized. It is often used in science to talk about the form of a molecule, protein, body part, or object. In more general use, it can also mean the overall form something takes.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず core は form「形」。information ではなく form が入っているので、「何かの形・配置の話だ」と寄せて覚える。さらに con- が付くと「全体としてどう形づくられているか」という感覚になり、化学では分子全体の立体的な並びを指しやすい。conform が「形を合わせる」、conformation が「でき上がった形・配座」。つづりが似た confirmation「確認」と取り違えやすいので、fir が入ると確認、form が入ると形、と切り分けると残りやすい。
Focus on form in the middle: con- + form + -ation. That gives the idea of how something is shaped or arranged as a whole. Do not mix it up with confirmation: form is about shape, but firm in confirmation points to making something certain.

conformation はラテン語 conformare「形を合わせる」にさかのぼり、con-「共に」＋ form「形」＋ -ation で成ります。conform や reform と並べると、「どう形づくられているか」という構造の意味が腑に落ちます。
Conformation goes back to Latin conformare, from con- "together" and forma "shape, form." It first carried the idea of shaping something in agreement with a form, and later developed into the sense of the way something is formed or arranged. It is related to English words such as conform, form, and reform.
