congressman は congress + man で、congress はラテン語 congressus「会合」に由来します。これは con-「共に」+ gradi/gress「歩む」から成り、「人々が一緒に集まる場」に man が付いて「議会の人」、つまり議員になりました。関連語に progress、aggression があります。
