主に米国で、州の立法機関である州議会の議員を指す語。州の法律や予算について審議し、地域住民の利益を代表して法案の提案や投票を行う男性議員に使われることが多い。
An assemblyman is a male member of a legislative assembly, especially in some U.S. state governments. The word is used in politics and government contexts. In modern usage, more gender-neutral terms such as assembly member are often preferred.

assemblyman は assembly「集会・議会」+ man「人」から成る語です。assembly は古フランス語 assembler を経て、ラテン語 simul「一緒に」にさかのぼるため、全体で「集まって議事をする場の人」から「議員」という意味になります。関連語は assemble, reassemble。
Assemblyman is made from assembly and man. Assembly came through Old French from forms meaning "to gather together," ultimately linked to the idea of being together, seen also in assemble and reassemble. So the word originally meant a man who belongs to an assembly, and from that it came to mean a member of a legislative body.
