悪霊や悪魔に取りつかれたとされる人や場所に対し、宗教的な祈りや儀式によってそれらを追い払う役目を担う人を指す。キリスト教の文脈で使われることが多いが、物語では怪異を鎮める聖職者や祈祷師のような存在として描かれることもある。

まず exorcise（悪魔を祓う）と exorcism（悪魔祓いの儀式）をセットで覚え、その行為をする“人”が exorcist。-ist は artist, scientist などと同じ「〜する人」なので形で納得しやすい。ホラーでは call an exorcist, perform an exorcism の形が頻出で、司祭や祈祷師が儀式を行う場面と結びつけると残る。exist とつづりがかなり近いので混同注意。c が入る ex-or-c-ist を見たら「祓う専門家」と判別する。
