祈りや儀式などによって悪霊や悪魔を人や場所から追い出すことを表す動詞。宗教的・超自然的な文脈で使われるほか、比喩的に恐怖やつらい記憶、不安などを心から払いのけるという意味で用いられることもある。
To exorcise means to drive out an evil spirit or unwanted force, usually through a religious or spiritual action. It can also be used more generally for getting rid of a strong fear, memory, or bad feeling.
