lineal は line「線」に形容詞語尾 -al が付いた語で、line はラテン語 linea「糸・線」にさかのぼります。もともと「一本の線につながる」が中心イメージで、そこから家系が一直線に続く「直系の」という意味になりました。関連語に line, lineage があります。
