A masochist is a person who enjoys pain, difficulty, or unpleasant treatment, especially more than most people. The word is used in psychology and in everyday speech, sometimes seriously and sometimes jokingly. In casual use, it can also describe someone who seems to choose stressful or uncomfortable situations.

語尾の -ist は「〜する人・〜主義の人」で、pianist や artist と同じ形。まず masochism（マゾヒズム）を知っていれば、その人版が masochist と押さえやすいです。対でよく出るのは sadist で、「他人に痛みを与えて快感」か「自分が受けて快感」かがきれいに反対。単なる我慢強い人ではなく、苦痛や屈辱そのものに快感を結びつける点が核心。心理学用語としても、比喩で「わざわざつらい状況を選ぶ人」と皮肉る場面でも見かけます。
Notice the ending `-ist`, the same person ending as in `artist` or `pianist`. If you know `masochism`, then `masochist` is simply the person form. It is often remembered together with `sadist`, because the two words are opposites in direction.
