descend「下りる」を知っていると覚えやすい語です。家系図で上に祖先、下に子や孫が並ぶ形を思い浮かべると、descendant は「祖先から代を下ってきた人」＝子孫。ancestor「祖先」と必ず対で整理すると混同しにくくなります。形は descend + -ant で覚え、direct descendant（直系の子孫）、a descendant of ...（…の子孫）の形ごと覚えると実際の英文でも定着しやすいです。

descendant はラテン語 descendere「下へ降りる」から来て、de-「下へ」+ scandere「登る」+ -ant「〜する者」の形です。ascend や descend と同根で、家系では祖先から代を下って「降りてきた者」だから「子孫」になると分かると、縦の系譜が見えてきます。
