continuing は continue の現在分詞で、ラテン語 continuare「つなぎ合わせる」に由来し、その奥に continere「一緒に保つ」がある。con-「共に」＋ tenere「保つ」の感覚は continuous・contain にも残り、切れずにつながることから「継続中」の意味になる。
