continuing は continue の現在分詞で、ラテン語 continuare「つなぎ合わせる」に由来し、その奥に continere「一緒に保つ」がある。con-「共に」＋ tenere「保つ」の感覚は continuous・contain にも残り、切れずにつながることから「継続中」の意味になる。
Continuing is formed from continue by dropping the final silent e and adding the participial suffix -ing. Continue entered English through French from Latin continuare, “to join together or make continuous,” related to continuus, “uninterrupted.” These forms are ultimately associated with continere, “to hold together,” from con-, “together,” and tenere, “to hold.” The adjective therefore preserves the idea of something remaining connected through time.
