Corundum is a very hard mineral made mainly of aluminum oxide. It is used as an abrasive in industry, and its gem forms include ruby and sapphire.

corundum は18世紀に英印語経由でタミル語 kurundam「ルビー・サファイア類」に由来し、さらにサンスクリット kuruvinda にさかのぼるとされます。接辞分解の語ではなく宝石名が鉱物名になった語で、関連語に carborundum があり、「宝石級に硬い鉱物」という感覚で意味がつかめます。
Corundum entered English in the 18th century through an Anglo-Indian form from Tamil kurundam, and it is often traced further back to Sanskrit kuruvinda. It did not grow from smaller Greek or Latin parts, but came from an older gemstone name. Over time, that traditional name became the standard mineral name in English. A related modern word is carborundum.
