criticising の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語「krinein(分け隔てる・判断する)」に由来し、フランス語を経て英語に入りました。語根「crit」に動詞化接尾辞「-ise」が付き、「基準を分けて厳しく評価する」意味に変化したのが「批判する」の語源です。同語根語に「criterion(基準)」や「critic(批評家)」があります。
Criticising is the -ing form of British English criticise, made by dropping the final e and adding -ing. Criticise belongs to the word family of critic and criticism, ultimately derived from Greek krinein, “to separate, decide, or judge,” and kritikos, “able to judge.” Through French and later English formation with -ise, the verb developed the sense of evaluating and, more specifically, pointing out faults or expressing disapproval.
