noun

注ぎ口つぎくち

解説 Definition

やかん・ポット・急須などで、液体を外へ注ぐために細長く突き出た部分を指す名詞。中身をこぼさず狙った方向へ流す役割があり、容器の形や使いやすさを説明するときや、水差し・じょうろなどの部品名としてよく使われる。

The narrow projecting part of a kettle, pot, jug, or similar container through which liquid is poured. It directs the liquid so that it can flow out neatly and accurately.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

Notice out inside spout and picture water traveling out through the projecting tube of a kettle. Focus on the physical part of the container that guides the stream.

例文

The kettle's spout is chipped.

そのやかんの注ぎ口は欠けている。

Water poured smoothly from the spout.

水は注ぎ口からなめらかに流れ出た。

She cleaned the coffee pot's spout with a small brush.

彼女は小さなブラシでコーヒーポットの注ぎ口を掃除した。

spout の語源・成り立ち Etymology

spout は中英語 spouten を経て、ゲルマン祖語 *sput-、さらに「つばを吐く」を表す印欧語根 *sp(y)eu- へさかのぼる擬音的な語です。spew や sputter と比べると、液体や言葉が勢いよく噴き出す感覚から「注ぎ口」「まくしたてる」の意味が育ったとわかります。

The word is linked through Middle English spouten to a Germanic base associated with spitting or spurting. Its sense developed from something forcefully coming out to the opening that directs a flow.
