dispensary はラテン語 dispensare 由来の dispense に -ary が付いた語です。dis-「分けて」+ pendere「量る」が核で、indispensable や compensate と同根。薬を量って分け与える場所だと考えると、薬局の意味が見えます。
Dispensary is built from dispense plus the ending -ary, and goes back to Latin dispensare. That Latin verb meant "to weigh out and distribute," from dis- "apart" and pendere "to weigh."
