dispensable は dispense「分配する・なしで済ます」に -able が付いた形です。dispense はラテン語 dispensare にさかのぼり、dis-「分けて」+ pendere「量る」を含み、expend や pendulum と同系で、「取り分けて省ける」から『なくてもよい』になります。
`Dispensable` is built from `dispense` and the suffix `-able`. `Dispense` comes through Latin from *dispensare*, based on ideas of dividing out and weighing, from *dis-* "apart" and *pendere* "to weigh." From the sense of "deal out" and later "do without," `dispensable` came to mean something that can be left aside; related English words include `dispense`, `dispensation`, and `expend`.
