faucetは古仏語fausset「小さな栓」に由来し、その元はラテン語faux / fauc-「喉・口」。医学語faucesやfaucialも同根で、樽の“喉”のような注ぎ口を指した感覚が、今の蛇口の意味につながった。
Faucet came from Old French fausset, meaning a small stopper or tap. That word is linked to Latin faux or fauc-, meaning "throat" or "mouth." The image was of a barrel's "throat" where liquid comes out, and this later became the modern sense of a water tap; fauces is from the same root.
