uncompromisingはun-「否定」+ compromising。compromiseはフランス語compromisを経てラテン語compromissum「相互の約束」にさかのぼり、promiseやpromissoryと同根なので、「譲歩の約束をしない」から「妥協しない」とわかる。
Uncompromising is made from un- "not" and compromising. Compromise came through French from Latin compromissum, which meant a mutual promise or agreement; it is related to promise and promissory. So the word first suggests "not making a mutual agreement," and from there it came to mean "not willing to give way or soften."
