フランス語 facette を経てラテン語 facies「顔・外見」にさかのぼります。宝石の小さな切断面が原義で、そこから物事の「一つの顔」という比喩で facet が「側面」となり、face も近縁です。
Facet came through French facette from Latin facies, meaning "face" or "appearance." It first referred to a small flat face cut on a jewel. From there, it was used in a figurative way for one "face" or side of something. Face is a close relative.
