spigot は中英語を経て古フランス語方言 espigeot にさかのぼり、さらにラテン語 spica「とがった穂・先」に通じるとされます。spike や spicule と同根で、『差し込んで止める栓』がもともと『尖ったもの』から来たと見える語です。
