インターン
解説 Definition
「intern」は動詞で、「インターンとして働く」「実習をする」という意味です。学生や新人が職場で実務経験を積む場合に使われます。
To intern means to work as an intern, usually for a limited time to gain practical experience in a job or profession. It is commonly used for students or recent graduates who are learning in a real workplace.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
intern はまず internal の in を思い出すと覚えやすく、「組織の内側に入って、現場で学ぶ」が核です。名詞では an intern、動詞では intern at a company / hospital の形で出やすく、internship はその期間。似た trainee は研修対象全般で、intern は学生や新人が実務経験を積む場面に寄りやすい語です。医療文脈では病院勤務の若手を指すこともあります。なお be interned になると歴史・戦時文脈で「拘束・収容される」に変わるので、語形で意味を切り替えて覚えると混同しません。
Remember intern together with internship. Think of common patterns like "intern at a company" or "summer intern," where someone gets real work experience for a limited time. This helps separate it from trainee or apprentice, which are broader or more traditional.
例文
She will intern at a law firm this summer.
彼女は今年の夏、法律事務所でインターンをします。
I interned at a hospital before applying to medical school.
私は医学部に出願する前に病院でインターンをしました。
Many students want to intern at companies overseas.
多くの学生が海外の企業でインターンをしたいと思っています。

解説 Definition
戦時や政治的な緊張下などで、人や集団を危険人物とみなして自由を奪い、収容所や指定区域に留め置くことを指す。政府や軍の措置を述べる硬い語で、犯罪者として正式に有罪にする場合とは限らない。
To officially confine a person or group to a camp or restricted area, especially during a war or period of political tension. This government or military action does not necessarily mean that the people have been convicted of a crime.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
intern は internal の in を思い出し、「内側に閉じ込める」と考えると覚えやすいです。政府や軍が人を自由に動けない場所の内側へ入れておくのが intern「抑留する」。be interned in a camp のように受け身で出やすく、会社や病院で働く intern「研修生」とは文脈が大きく違います。war, enemy nationals, civilians, camp が近くにあれば、研修ではなく「抑留」と切り替えて覚えると混同しません。
Connect intern with in or internal and picture people being kept inside a restricted place. The passive pattern "be interned in a camp" is common; references to war, civilians, or enemy nationals distinguish this verb from the noun meaning a trainee.
例文
The government interned thousands of civilians during the war.
政府は戦時中に何千人もの民間人を抑留した。
Enemy nationals were interned in remote camps.
敵国民は人里離れた収容所に抑留された。
They feared being interned without a trial.
彼らは裁判なしで抑留されることを恐れていた。

intern の語源・成り立ち Etymology
intern は名詞 intern から動詞化した語で、語源はフランス語 interne「院内勤務の医師」、さらにラテン語 internus「内側の」へさかのぼります。internal, internist と同根で、「組織の内部で実地に働く」感覚から、研修生として働く意味になりました。
Intern as a verb comes from the noun intern. That noun came through French interne, meaning a doctor working inside a hospital, from Latin internus, meaning "inside" or "inner." From this sense of working within an institution, the word developed into the modern idea of serving as a trainee. Related words include internal and internist.
