crowd（群衆）+ funding（資金調達）の現代英語の合成語で、2006年頃に造語された。crowd は古英語 crūdan（押し寄せる）、fund はラテン語 fundus（底・基盤）が語源。関連語: crowdsourcing（群衆への外注）、fund（基金）。大勢の人が少額ずつ出し合い資金の「土台」を作るという意味合い。
