degreaser は de-「取り除く」＋grease「脂」＋-er「その働きをするもの」。grease は古フランス語を経て、俗ラテン語 *crassia（脂）に由来し、語全体で「脂を取り去るもの」と読める。だから脱脂剤の意味が自然で、関連語は degrease, greasy。
