覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 dial「電話番号を入力する」に -ing を付けた形で、米国式綴りでは dialing、英国式では dialling も使います。発音は /ˈdaɪəlɪŋ/ で、dial の二重母音を保ちます。回転式の番号盤から、現代の画面で番号を押して発信する動作までを「dial a number」という定番表現で覚えましょう。
Dialing is the -ing form of dial, meaning “to enter a telephone number and begin a call.” In American spelling, the usual form is dialing with one l; British English also commonly uses dialling with two. It is pronounced /ˈdaɪəlɪŋ/, keeping the two-syllable sound of dial. Connect it with the common phrase dial a number. Although a dial was originally a circular numbered plate, dialing now includes tapping numbers on a keypad or touchscreen, as in She is dialing her office number.
例文
She is dialing her office number.
彼女は職場の番号に電話をかけています。
I made a mistake while dialing the hotel.
ホテルに電話をかけるときに番号を間違えました。
The phone screen shows that he is dialing now.
電話の画面には、彼が今発信中であることが表示されています。

dialing の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語の「日」を意味するdiesが語源で、元は太陽の動きで時刻を測る日時計を指しました。この円盤のイメージが電話機の番号盤へ転じ、接尾辞-ingと結びつき数字を回して選択する動作を表します。同じ語根のdaily(毎日の)も日の経過から成り、時間の目盛りを共有しているのが分かります。
Dialing consists of dial plus the suffix -ing. Dial ultimately comes through Latin and Medieval Latin words associated with a day and with devices that marked time, especially sundials. The name was later applied to other graduated circular plates, including the numbered plate on a rotary telephone. From that noun came the verb dial, and its meaning now extends to entering a number electronically.
