ウェブページや文書の下部に配置される領域で、補足的な情報をまとめて載せる部分です。通常は著作権表記や連絡先、関連リンクなどを表示し、閲覧者が必要な情報にすぐアクセスできるようにします。複数ページに共通して表示されることが多く、文書全体の構成を整える役割も果たします。

footerはfoot「足・下部」（古英語fot）に接尾辞-erが付いた語で、もとは「足で動く人」やフットボールのけりを表しました。footingやfootnoteと同じく「いちばん下」の発想を受け継ぎ、文書やウェブのfooterもページの足元にある部分だと考えると意味がつながります。
