footing は foot「足」に動作・状態を表す -ing が付いた語で、古英語 fot に由来します。もともとは「足を置くこと・足の置き場」で、そこから足場や立場という意味へ広がりました。関連語に foothold, footstep があります。
Footing comes from foot with the ending -ing, and foot goes back to Old English fot. At first it meant placing the foot or having a place for the foot. From that physical sense, it widened to mean firm support, a foothold, or even someone's position in a situation.
